Thinking about a career in medicine? Before you apply to medical school, you need to hear the honest truth about the financial, emotional, and personal toll of becoming a doctor. Dr. Felix Boecker discusses the 6 questions every pre-med student must ask.
🚨 Is Medicine Right for You? The Questions No One Asks
Are you considering a career in medicine? Or are you already a student or physician wondering if you made the right choice?
Trauma Surgeon, Wound Care Specialist, and Life Coach, Dr. Felix Boecker, is here to tell you the truth. He shares his own unpredictable journey—from being a general surgeon he never wanted to be, to a trauma surgeon in the Air Force, to a wound care specialist, and finally to a life coach after two divorces.
Most people ask about MCAT scores, salary, and lifestyle specialties, but they don't ask the questions that actually matter.
Dr. Boecker reveals the 6 questions you MUST answer honestly to determine if you will thrive in medicine, or if medicine will destroy you:
Motivation: Why do you actually want to do this? (Beyond "I want to help people")
Identity: Are you willing to let medicine consume your identity? It will take everything you give it.
Relationships: What are you willing to sacrifice? Medicine will damage your relationships. Dr. Boecker was divorced twice, with medicine playing a significant role.
Emotional Toll: Are you prepared for the mental and emotional toll, including high rates of physician depression, anxiety, and suicide?
Financial Reality: Do you understand the massive debt (up to $400,000 or more) and the true financial picture compared to other fields?
Autonomy: Can you function without control in a business-driven system ruled by administrators and insurance companies?
Ultimately, Dr. Boecker advocates for Extreme Ownership—taking full control of your career and well-being because you're the only one who can fix it.
If you've listened to this and still want to pursue medicine, go in with your eyes open and have a plan for protecting what matters: your mental health, your relationships, your identity, and your finances.
